Makowski, a Catholic Sister, takes readers on a deeply personal journey, sharing her experiences working within the Church while challenging the notion of the Church as a "perfect society." Instead, she embraces the Vatican II concept of the Church as the "People of God," emphasizing the humanity and imperfection of both the institution and its members. Her message is clear: God is not confined to church buildings, rituals, or dogma. Rather, God is a living presence that can be found in the everyday acts of love, kindness, and compassion that we show to one another.
The strength of this book lies in Makowski's storytelling. She writes with honesty and vulnerability, sharing moments of doubt, failure, and unexpected joy. Through her anecdotes, she highlights a God of surprises—a God who appears in the least expected places and through the most unlikely people. Whether it’s in the quiet moments of prayer, the chaos of everyday life, or in the encounters with strangers, Makowski shows that God is always present, waiting to be discovered.
One of the most compelling aspects of Searching for God and Finding the Treasure is its accessibility. Makowski's writing is clear and engaging, making complex theological concepts easy to understand for readers of all backgrounds. She invites readers to let go of rigid expectations of where God should be and instead open their hearts to the possibility that God is already here, in the midst of our lives, in our failures, and in our triumphs.
For those who may have been disillusioned by the traditional structures of the Church, Makowski's book offers a refreshing perspective. It serves as a gentle reminder that spirituality is not about perfection but about the journey—a journey filled with love, forgiveness, and the ever-present possibility of encountering God in unexpected places.
For those interested in a book that combines spirituality, personal reflection, and the wisdom of lived experiences, this is a must-read.
